I almost gave up on this book after less than an hour of reading because I found the writing to be quite challenging. I'm so happy I kept on for a bit longer because I got used to the writing and it's really part of what makes the book really good, and because the story itself is excellent. While the book highlights some really sad and terrible conditions in which black women were leaving, the book is really enjoyable to read. The characters are really well developed and engaging to follow throughout their lives.
