Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China by Jung Chang

3.0

Chang brought the Empress Dowager's story back to light in its vivid glory. The read was truly very enjoyable, and unlike traditional biographies, the writing was not at all dry. Contrary, there was an air of ancient elegance in the manner of which Cixi's story was brought back to life. Although I only gave it 3 stars, it is truly a recommended read if you have any interest in China's rich history. Two stars were not given simply because (in my opinion) the eventful era of Cixi was digestible, though still somewhat confusing. I do not usually read biographies, so interested readers who have experience in reading historical biographies may not experience this problem.
