Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell
4.5

I didn’t expect this book to hold up compared to the first one, but surprisingly I liked it even more. A sequel wasn’t required, or maybe even warranted, but Rowell nonetheless wrote a well executed adventure quest that takes place in the midst of Simon’s growing pains into adulthood and reckoning with his trauma. Of course Penelope and Baz are along for the ride, while also reckoning with their own issues. They both get a wonderful amount of character study and development. I don’t think it’s often that you get to see YA characters reflect on their youthful trials and behavior through a (more) adult lens.

The surprising shining points of this book for me was the building on Agatha and the introduction of Shepherd. Agatha goes from running away from her world to harnessing her magic and being the damsel to save herself. Shepherd is an earnest cutie pie who is also a secret badass with his river and dragon BFFs.

Lastly, if Shepherd and Penelope don’t fall in love I’ll riot.
