Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult by Michelle Dowd

4.0

What would it be like to only ever know a life that was preparing you for the end of times? A life where you are denied affection and sustenance in order to prepare you for God’s wrath that most certainly will rain down upon you? Michelle Dowd grew up in the doomsday cult referred to as the Field that was started by her grandfather; living like this was her reality for her first 18 years of life.

This was a truly remarkable memoir and at times a hard read but so very worth it. Dowd sets it straight very early on that this will not be the story of her grandfather and his work but her story of what it was like to grow up under his ruling. As someone who tends to take an interest in true crime, it was really nice to switch gears and read about a survivors experience and eventual escape.
