Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 1 by Sorata Akiduki

3.0

Read the edition published by Viz media, looks to be the 2021 print. It includes the first four chapters of this manga series, as well as the author's one off called Colorful Seasons of August.

Overall, the story of the first volume is a decent introduction to a fantasy and (I assume it will go that direction) romance manga story about a girl of the name Shirayuki who, after learning that the prince of her country wants her as a concubine for her rare red hair, decides to flee and not let have anyone decide her path. On her escape she encounters Zen and a couple of other folks. We soon find out that Zen is another prince from a neighboring country.

The one-off is also a short cute story about a boy and a girl, hanging out during a summer before highschool, and we learn that the girl is actually moving to a different town for high school.

On to things that I liked first. I think that Shirayuki is an interesting character, and I like how she is pretty stead firm with her resolve. She really wants to do things her own way and will not let anyone take that away from her.

On to the negatives, I found the pacing of the introduction and some other moments in this first volume, quite fast and jarring, as in the first chapter alone, so much takes place in terms of the world building and plot. I think I understand why it was written that way, as the author wants to focus on the development of character Shirayuki and Zen, and their relationship. However, I do think that it could have been more interesting seeing more political intrigue. rather than having the politics as more of a backdrop.

All in all, I liked reading this first volume, but I am uncertain that I will continue this series anytime soon.
