Unfollow: A Journey from Hatred to Hope
by Megan Phelps-Roper
On the outside, Westboro Baptist Church seem like a hate-filled organisation. But Unfollow shows that the truth is more complicated.
Yes, obviously, some of the church's actions are appalling. But Phelps-Roper shows that their actions were driven by a desire to show the "truth" rather than a desire to hurt. That the church's blinkered view of what the truth is their real problem rather than being inherently evil.
Thus, a key message of this book is to showcase the dangers of never doubting what you think. One such danger being your own beliefs being used against you - such as Fred Phelps, the founder of the church, being excommunicated at the end of his life.
Phelps-Roper showed great courage to leave the church, knowing it meant being cut off her from her community forever. Not only did she lose most of her family, but she also had to accept that quite a lot of what she believed for first 26 years of life wasn't true.
