When the Sea Turned to Silver
by Grace Lin
In the middle of the night, the emperor breaks in and takes away Penmei's grandmother, known as the storyteller. The emperor agrees to release her if Penmei will bring him a luminous stone. And so begins Penmei's journey to find a luminous stone. The story is a mixture of her journey and the tales that she tells, which she learned from her grandmother.
While the story was good, I can't go so far as to say it was great because of the audiobook. I likely would have enjoyed it more had I just read the book myself. While I can't pinpoint a specific issue with the audiobook - the narrator did a good job (she has a soft voice, but that hasn't ever bothered me before), and her pacing was fine - I just kept getting distracted. I ended up listening to about 3 hours of the book, in various points, multiple times because I kept zoning out and realizing I couldn't remember the last 15ish minutes.
So, I guess I'll finish by saying that if you decide to read this book, then read it - don't listen to it.
