The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander

Well it was quite a journey reading it aloud--almost two years, but we pressed on and finished tonight! I was quite surprised by pretty much every turn of events in this book, even at the end. Then we looked at the pronunciation guide in the end and realized we had been pronouncing several names incorrectly, although most I got correct. Darn Gaelic names! I think we both enjoyed it, and the time spent together reading. I hope he will suffer through me reading the next one to him, and the next, and the last.... I better hurry--at this pace I'll never finish the series before he goes off to college!

As for the story itself, well, I'll let other reviews cover that. I'm tired and was only hoping to offer the personal angle about the book anyway. For such a classic, this 2nd book of Prydain (no matter how it is pronounced, although my son preferred my incorrect pronunciation PRY-dane) was a fun story. Long live Taran Assistant Pig-Keeper!
