The Lies That Bind
by Emily Giffin
Cecily Gardner thought she had it all figured out until one day she ends up post-breakup in a New York City dive bar at 2 a.m. After working up the liquid courage to call him, she hears a voice next to her saying “don’t do it” and when she looks up, there he is. No, not her ex but a new ‘he’. A ‘he’ that doesn’t tell her his name until after they’ve gone home, a he that doesn’t take advantage of her, that calls when he says he does and is romantic in all the right moments. Grant seems perfect and their new relationship is tested, passing with flying colors as he has to move abroad to help his brother.
He arrives stateside on September 10, 2001 and works in the South Tower. He’s soon lost. That perfect, passionate love story is broken leaving Cecily to heal and as she soon learns, she’s not the only one grieving for Grant. As a local reporter, she has learned to follow her gut and her gut says there’s more to the story.
I’ve loved reading Giffin’s novels over the years and I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. The main character as a woman is a theme that has become VERY popular especially in a coming-of-age style and this doesn’t disappoint. The beginning of the book was the best part. There are a couple of twists and I didn’t necessarily see coming that make the story more interesting but at some point become unrealistic. The ending of the book was rushed but it definitely tied up the loose ends. Overall, I’d say this was a 3.5-4 stars for me! I waver just because I did enjoy the character development and I love a good, WILD twist.
Thanks to NetGalley, Emily Giffin and Random House Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! This novel is set to release June 2, 2020. If you have enjoyed past Emily Giffin books, I would definitely recommend!
