The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
5.0
I loved this novel so much I might just start it over again. I loved the sketched-in magic of the water horses, and reading Stiefvater's note at the end about her attempts to tell the story provided some context for why the myth was sparse but still felt like such a naturally embedded part of the book. I adored the main characters and the care that was put into mostly unrevealed backstory for the secondary characters. Stiefvater has a subtle ability to describe behaviors that signify mental health issues contextually and in character. I was impressed by that throughout, and am also here for water horses as a runaway nervous system/anxiety metaphor. ;) Poor anxious bloodthirsty ponies. <3
