The Kissing Booth
by Beth Reekles
Man I felt older than dirt reading this book. Then when I finished I found out the author was 17 when she wrote the book and that made a little more sense but still? If this similar to her real life or how she thinks teenage life should be? My biggest issues were the lack of parenting by the parents and the problematic controlling behavior by Noah. (See: older than dirt) Honestly, the parents just furnish the houses to party in and provide money for more partying and Starbucks. The dad of the main character, Elle, wasn’t even bothered that his daughter came home after prom the following morning in her dress from the night before (I.e. the walk of shame) because she stayed out all night at a hotel??? How can you just let a 16 year old stay out all night with not even a mention of a curfew? I don’t think general safety rules makes you too strict of a parent - am I wrong here? And Noah and his constant fights and threatening, controlling behavior- that’s attractive??? I have a feeling this was written around the time when Twilight and 50 Shades were popular and it was hot & sexy to have a guy be domineering/controlling over you, but in real life? That’s not a good look or personality trait to want in any partner.
This book was a cute little movie on Netflix but they definitely changed a lot of it for the screen. The most dramatic change? Lee, Noah’s brother and Elle’s best friend. Who went from a normal cute guy in the book to a total nerd in the movie.
Was the book completely terrible? No. It’s definitely an easy quick read that is not heavy or in anyway deep or moving. Would I read it again or recommend it to a friend? Also No. Why did I continue to read it and finish it? I like Rom-Coms and I like YA even though I am clearly an old lady now (lol) but like I said: it wasn’t terrible but it also wasn’t great. Overall: Meh
