The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
4.0
I liked the style of a "factual" account of the invasion. It's only the actual plot that matters, so it's a very matter-of-fact style of writing just laying out what happens with no elaboration, and only as much characterisation as is necessary, with no characters even being named. All the way through I kept having to remind myself how long ago this was written, because it seemed so ahead of its time and predicted so many things. I particularly enjoyed the analogies between the way the martians felt about humans, and the way humans feel about other animals - this was not a book where I was expecting to find messages of antispeciesism, but it was a pleasant surprise!
