Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

2.0

I have to say I was pretty disappointed with this. I knew it would be depressing, after all it was based on a Dickens novel, but it was such an onslaught of misfortune every time I picked up the book that I found myself actively avoiding reading rather than eagerly anticipating.

I get that Kingsolver has a message she wanted to portray but I feel like she just tried to cover too many issues and never managed to really cover any one of them fully.

I also really struggled with the voice of the main character...he was so misogynistic that it gave me the ick. He sexualizes every single woman in his life and all of the female characters seem very one dimensional, they're all either mothers or sex objects.

For the length of the novel, the denouement felt shockingly short and without giving anything away I'll just say personally I don't agree with how she ended it.

It was just SO LONG and I'm honestly just relieved to be done with it.
