lizziaha 's review for:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer
slow-paced
Following the story of a writer corresponding with the inhabitants of Guernsey, this book is a very slow build. The epistolary format is delightful, especially since Juliet is witty and lovable and she collects correspondents who are all a bit odd. It’s fun to watch her get to know these people, and even more fun to watch as she’s the last to realize just how embedded she is with these people. I adored Isala’s eccentricities and Eli’s shy kindness and Dawsy’s good-hearted stoicism and Sidney’s cheery adoration for Juliet and Kit’s sturdy and careful assessment of everyone she comes in contact with and how they all revolve around Elizabeth, both the sun and the gaping hole in the story. Despite confronting some of the horrors of war, this book is definitely cozy. I wish there had been a bit more romance, but what there was had me grinning.
Graphic: Death, Grief, War
Moderate: Animal death, Genocide, Gun violence, Physical abuse, Slavery, Torture
