This book was bad for a variety of reason. Number one was the pace. It was so slow. One hundred pages of build up to something actually happening was far far too long. And then it just kept happening. The same event for the rest of the book. People dying in the same way. Second, it was trite. It added nothing new or interesting to the Star Wars universe. It played on over used themes and was utterly predictable. And thirdly, and honestly maybe the most annoying thing, it had a whole cast of pointless characters. They really added nothing to the story and I wasn’t sure at time why I was reading about them. I learned about half way through that they were parachuted in from young adult novels and graphic novels. The Legacy Star Wars books didn’t do that. The stories in them were separate from any other media. So someone who didn’t want to read young adult books or comics wasn’t missing content essential to the books. Now, Disney has gone and tied them all together and made it impossible to enjoy one without the others. All these random character with backstories and motivations that were completely absent for me as the reader just made the story boring and slow. Lastly, the writing was, quite frankly, weak. The author constantly referred to characters by their full name, as if they needed to be reintroduced every time they appeared. It got annoying. There was random and strange formatting, as if I was reading a text book rather than fiction. There was over usage of words and phrases to the point that every time I read the word firmament I rolled my eyes and had to book down for a bit or risk throwing it across the room.
I am typically pretty generous with my reviews, and only give a one star to books that I DNF, but this was a genuinely bad book.
