I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I'd seen the movie, so I knew what was coming, but it was still an enjoyable read. I was distracted a bit by the incongruence of Jack's voice... unnaturally intelligent or poetic for a 5 year old in points, unnaturally babyish for a 5 year old at points, and (this was the most distracting for me: distinctly not-American turns of phrase). But let's be real: who expects a novel narrated by a 5 year old to be realistic? Not me. I thought it was intriguing overall and a smart execution of a difficult story and difficult narrative premise.
