Lady of Darkness by Melissa K. Roehrich

4.0

Solid 4.5 stars. 3rd person, dual POV of Scarlett and Ryker throughout (LOVED this). Where to begin?

If you’re looking to fill the post Throne of Glass void, I welcome you to try and immerse yourself in this alternate universe which seems, on the surface, quite similar to Maas’ masterpiece. Here’s to hoping there is sufficient remix throughout the series for this not to count as plagiarism.

We have Scarlett, a silver haired, blue eyes assassin girl who is known as the Death’s Maiden, one of the 3 sisters who have been trained by the Black Syndicate and is under the paw of the Assassin Lord. She’s of course, also Fae and has royal heritage she was unaware of, and fights with all her ignorant might to not learn anything about her powers. She also has a huge hero complex and will happily sacrifice herself to redeem her guilt for simply surviving. Seem familiar? The remix here is that she has a larger chosen family, and she feels responsible for the orphans under the protection of the Black Syndicate. Let’s continue.

We have Ryker/Sorin Aditya/ Prince of Fire, who’s revealed to be her mortal enemy (albeit most likely a result of her indoctrination about the Fae in general), and he does a pretty good job of being a growling, territorial personal trainer. He’s pretty straightforward about his feeling, and highkey Scarlett’s previous betrayals from other people have made her reactions to him so dramatic.

Some of the prose is genuinely very immersive and beautifully written, whereas some phrases (“she threw him a particularly vulgar gesture”, “Don’t call me that” in response to about 50% of Sorin’s pet names) were quite repetitive.

The side characters are pretty interesting too. Prince Callan is basically a combination of early Chaol (60%) and Dorian (40%), and his relevant to the rest of the plot is to be continued.

Overall, intrigued to see where the series will continue, as many revelations already happened in this instalment, so the rest of the books will hopefully have a lot of adventures to follow.
