This book achieves a depth only possible by years of rigorous research. Gourevitch has full command of the facts, the procedural history, and the human toll of the Rwandan genocide. He does a fantastic job of outlining the multiple causes of the genocide. Not content with pointing the finger at a single event (Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated!), Gourevitch unfolds the drama with historical and political context. I was surprised how effectively the Hutus used radio and other propaganda to escalate this terrorism. Kind of makes me wish the FCC would bring the "Fairness Doctrine" back...
While we rally around the Holocaust shouting "Never Again!," we stood by and let this happen. My God, over 800k people killed, by machete no less!
