The Hunchback by Regine Abel

4.0

Another great sci-fi take on a classic tale! This one includes angelic/demonic alien species, human hybrids who can wield great powers, two seriously cute imps, and a somewhat odd mix of Eastern mysticism and Roman deities.

Taking place in a planetary system where humans were welcomed because they can be vessels of the Divine Light, The Hunchback is the story of Kwazeem, a Fallen "half-breed" with a curious and unusual fluctuating hump on his back, and Esmerelda, the latest hotness in Vestals—she is Anointed, meaning she has some serious capacity for creating and channeling Divine Light. When the two of them come together, magical things happen.

The Hunchback was a little difficult for me to focus on at times—something about the writing choices and style Abel made for this one weren't quite jiving with my brain—but it was worth fighting through and hanging on 'til the end.
