This anthology of selected works by Yi Sang was a challenging but fascinating read. This is actually the first time I’m reading any of Yi Sang’s writings, admittedly because I was a little intimidated by the very experimental nature of his writings and not being able to grasp what he’s getting at. And, on that note, the translators went above and beyond with this anthology, not only in their translations but also providing significant historical and cultural contexts to Yi Sang’s poems, essays, and short stories all the more accessible to the reader. Dadaism and surrealism are tough to begin with, but then to translate them into English from a language as highly contextual as Korean is remarkable.

Read the poems for the Sealey Challenge.
