Tenth of December: Stories
by George Saunders
It's painful to admit that I neither enjoyed nor admired this collection of stories to the degree that I feel like I should have. The word "hilarious" appears often in reviews and blurbs, which for me sets a high bar for laugh-out-loud comedy. There is some witty satire, and the best stories channel Vonnegut, but hilarious? Not for this reader. "Semplica Girl Diaries," "Escape from Spiderhead," "Al Roosten", "My Chivalric Fiasco" and "Home" are standouts; the rest ... I struggled to connect with.
