I was recc'd this book by a friend and was really looking forward to it - unfortunately the story is unsatisfying and mired in racism, transphobia, homophobia, classism, sexism....just about everything, basically! There's unlikable narrators and then there's narrators who go unchallenged in their bigotry (Scott!! Scott!! Scott!!). On the story itself; I was disappointed by that, too. I was under the impression this would be a dark urban fantasy -
but Scott just got really high, I guess. And her chemo gave her "superpowers." Still doesn't explain the leviathan's shadow or how she could cross impossible distances in the beginning of the novel.
It felt like the author thought she did something really clever. Unfortunately this book is of a different decade, and nothing about it is really worth digging up to re-live in 2022.
