We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation
by Eric Garcia
hopeful
informative
fast-paced
Focused on public policy and how it affects autistic people rather than the internal experience of autism or external manifestations of it. Some biographical and autobiographical anecdotes woven in. Good integration of disability justice history and perspectives that shows what the autism acceptance movement owes to previous waves of disabled activism, which often isn't well done in autism books! Not a starter book for those just learning what autism actually is, but a good overview of the issues facing the autistic community that focuses on ableism and structural barriers rather than autism itself as a barrier.
