smjarvi 's review for:
A Map of the World
by Jane Hamilton
As with "The Book of Ruth", another Jane Hamilton novel that I recently finished, this book is gorgeously written. The language is lush and evocative. I was frequently startled by the thought that though the book is written in my native tongue, I had rarely seen words put together in a way that made the sentences seem exotic and revelatory. I only wish that the plot of both books incorporated this same creativity. At the end of each, I found myself thinking "so what?" I didn't care much about the characters and the pace in many parts is glacial. I wanted to like this book and I read every word, but rather than finding a place on my bookshelf, it will be heading to the local Goodwill.
