Poison Princess by Kresley Cole
5.0
An AMAZING book! I'm seriously on the edge of my seat for most of the book. Definite 5 star rating from me!
Kresley Cole is an author that I'm not familiar with, so I can't even tell you how I heard of this series. I think I was at a Barnes & Noble over my lunch hour and saw this lady running to pick up the 2nd book in the series. She looked so enthusiastic that I just had to be nosy. And I'm SO glad I was! This book has everything! Thrills, chills, romance, anger, fear, comedy, EVERYTHING! I couldn't want for anything more. And Kresley does a phenomenal job with the characters of Evie and Jack. I mean, it's borderline perfect for me.
If there is one thing I cannot stand when it comes to books with female protagonists, is when the female starts off as a weak, insecure, whiny, or spoiled baby. Or all of the above. Well, let me edit that. I can't stand it IF they start off that way and also end that way. Kresley's character Evie is a prime example of how a character should be written.
From the beginning of the book, it's hard to fault Evie for how she is, especially after you meet her mother and learn about her upbringing, but I will be the first to say that Evie was a spoiled little brat. Through and through. She was wealthy, lived in a big house, had a rich boyfriend. She could want for nothing. But she also had some secrets, which are revealed throughout the book.
It was a constant roller coaster of emotions for me, when dealing with Evie. One moment I was loved her, the next moment I was too through with her. But that was great! I was really involved with her character. Her growth by the end of the book was superb, especially with how the book ended (**spoiler tease**).
Jack, the ying to Evie's yang, was awesome from the start. I think he started off exactly as he should have and evolved to the perfect point, by the end of book one. I was interested in Jack's character from chapter one because I knew there was more to him than he initally showed. That was obvious. But what I didn't know what how deep his secrets ran and how scarred he really was as a character. Seeing his and Evie's interactions were pure gold for me. He brought out the best in her and vice verse. But they were also poisonous to one another.
But the romance, oh boy, the romance! Kresley Cole's depiction of YA romance is a little smutty. And I LOVED it. I had no qualms about how much she mentioned sex or alluded to the fact. I think it made it that much more interesting. I will go out on a limb and say the tension between Jack and Evie was probably one of the best I've seen written. I felt all of it!
The paranormal aspect to the novel is absolutely perfection! To avoid spoilers, I will not mention what that aspect is. Just know that it's amazing! I found myself questioning everything. It left me with so many questions. About Evie. About the people she met along the way. About her family. About everything! It was that intense. And I'm eager to start book two!
Overall, I cannot believe I hadn't been introduced to this story before now. I was seriously missing out, but I have found it and I am NOT going back!
Kresley Cole, thank you so much for being SUCH a great storyteller! I have fallen in love with Evie and Jack, so I am really rooting for them!
