Menopausing: The Positive Roadmap to Your Second Spring by Davina McCall, Dr. Naomi Potter

emotional hopeful informative inspiring medium-paced

3.0

I didn't think this book is as good as everyone makes it out to be. It's very repetitive and basically says HRT is the holy grail, with concerns regarding breast cancer summarily dismissed. It is bulked out with lots of women telling their stories and Davina routinely commenting how the individual stories break her heart. When it comes to diagnosing whether you're in menopause, the old "12 months without a period" is trotted out. I'm on the progesterone only pill which means I haven't had a period in over 20 years. Am I just supposed to stop it or swap to a combined one to find out? No idea, topic not discussed. Also, if you still want to be on contraception while on HRT, is the mirena coil your only option? No idea, topic not discussed.

It is important to talk about the menopause, and more understanding from GPs is required. So any book trying to help with that is appreciated, and I hope it does help a lot of people. However, don't tell me to bloody exercise, take supplements and go on a diet - while that might generally be a good idea, it has nothing to do with the menopause per se, plus you're not a qualified dietician. I will copy out a few pages of helpful info, and that's that.
