Maurice by E.M. Forster

3.0

It was alright, I just don’t think I really connected with Forster’s writing. Nice that it has a happy ending but the ending itself felt quite rushed. I know and do appreciate why Forster wrote it that way, it just wasn’t very satisfying for me.

This is much more a journey of self acceptance rather than a romance. The romance is there, but a lot of the book is about shame and justifying Maurice’s feelings. Some parts of that really resonated with me and others felt outdated.

What is so interesting about this book is the real world context surrounding it, I think, and Forster’s drive for producing it rather than the book itself, which is a shame. On a brighter note, it has one of the best and most touching dedications I think I’ve ever read.
