This book was a probably my favourite in the series so far. I liked seeing how Mare fought through and endured her captivity,
coming out determined and more conscious of the people she loves and how much they have sacrificed for her.
. It was also interesting  seeing more of Maven and getting a teensy bit of his backstory while Mare was captive. I found the different perspectives refreshing and a good way of conveying events while different characters were out of commission.

I feel this book developed the characters and their connections more, and was less of a glorified newblood-collecting montage *violently side-eyes Glass Sword*. I liked the battle scenes a lot, and seeing how the plot twisted as a result of court intrigue and politics between the different nations.

I originally read the series because my sister wanted to sell the books. She stopped at King’s Cage because it was, quote unquote, “too dark”, but honestly it seems about as “dark” as any YA fantasy novel with a rebellion in its plot. I’m mind you, this is coming from someone who read The Book Thief, They Both Die At the End, and The Poppy War for fun, so I guess it’s a matter of opinion.
