Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts

This book would be appropriate for 9-12 year olds.

I'm wondering if most of the reviews of this book are based on nostalgia. If I had read it when I was a child, would I have liked it better? As it is, I wasn't particularly impressed. The three main girls are all very standard, and the magic seemed completely haphazard. Girl 1 and Girl 2 have special stones that let them do stuff, essentially. They don't know how to use them very well, but whatever they seem to need, the stones will do, after a little fiddling and concentration. Girl 3 acts as an amplifier for the power.

The writing was fairly basic, too. I admit my standards are fairly high--not every book can be A Wrinkle in Time, after all--but the voice lacks any maturity whatsoever, so it's hard for an adult like me to enjoy it. Definitely something I would recommend to children, not to friends.

The only part of the book I really liked was Phel, the magic spirit, who remind me of a fluffier Totoro.

Yup. Phel was okay by me.
