The Awesome by Eva Darrows

I didn’t give a lot of stars only because it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting—but that’s on me, not the book. I can see why some people don’t like the book but I think they’re missing a big piece of what makes it great. Usually slangy prose is annoying, like the author is trying to be cool or funny and it falls flat. But the reader should remember it’s the first person POV, not a narrator. And as far as keeping a unique consistent character voice, this is a triumph. It’s not like a one-off line—it’s how Maggie talks and thinks. It’s well done and consistent. It’s actually quite a clever device to remind the reader of her social status as a hunter. The characters were fun but I kinda wanted more or maybe a sequel.
