The Half-Made World
by Felix Gilman
Similar in tone to Johannes Cabal, this book is an absolute trip. There are some authors that can just convey certain images and feelings with very pointed words and phrases, and Felix Gilman is one of them.
Pros: The world is unlike any other and toys with reality in a way most books don't. It has that quirky steampunky victorian vibe that can be overdone so easily, but the balance is always perfect. The Powers and places visited are all quite memorable as well.
Cons: My library loan ran out 70% of the way through the book and I waited to finish it until I got it back. The fact that I didn't go out and buy it says something about the attention retention, or maybe it was just me at the time.
All in all, a lovely book that took me to very strange places and definitely left an impact on me. Most likely will read it again in the future, may or may not read the sequel. recommend to anyone who doesn't need a 'hard' magic system or encyclopedia to enjoy something, and appreciates the unknown.
