A young Indigenous woman has just given birth to her beautiful daughter Dawn and she’s just moved to the perfect Toronto subdivision with academic husband. But Alice can’t help but feel like she doesn’t belong. She isn’t connecting with her baby or her neighbours. But worst of all she’s noticed that time is moving strangely, she’s starting to hear voices and her neighbours go from passive aggressive to threatening. Her husband thinks it’s all in her head but Alice knows something is truly wrong.

This debut was a strong start with layers interwoven for the reader to peel back. I loved the beginning and the coming of age sections, they exploration of self and the desire to understand who you’ll become.

From the challenges of motherhood to generational trauma and modern Indigenous realities, with a dark comedic edge and horror elements, this one should be on your list.
