Nostalgic and Unique
When I heard this was a Hunger Games retelling I was afraid it would miss the point of the Hunger Games. However, this was so on point that it felt nostalgic while expanding on the very serious real world themes. It's advertising more A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but there is a lot of elements of the entire series. Definitely a good palette cleanse after a Hunger Games reread hating for Sunrise on the Reaping.
The world building was phenomenal! I don't think I'm done reading about this world yet. Again, you can see the Hunger Games, Last of Us, and Until Dawn elements clearly, especially if you read the books/played the games, however it's so absolutely unique.
The characters are rather complex and hold the nostalgia of the Hunger Games characters. Yet, they are still their own. There is no one character from HG that the characters from this book embody. It's a pretty good, but clear mixture.
As for the relationships, the romance itself felt placed in the correct spot in the plot, however, they did start crushing on eachother a little fast. The ending, which I won't spoil, made sense but was a little sad, but hopefully in this aspect.
This book was definitely the best if the author's to the point I feel this was the book Ava was meant to write. Very subtle hints of her other books could be felt in this story, too. If she wanted to write one, I would definitely want a sequel. Plus, the ending would make it easy to one set up. However, knowing this ending verses the ABOSAS ending, it's likely a finished deal. Overall, definitely an amazing read, and more than I was hoping for.
