I wasn’t sure what French symbolism was until reading this book, and now I’ve had plenty of it. Perhaps if I understood the symbolism better it would be more powerful, but unfortunately most of the book was frustrating to get through.

Symbolism here is extremely literal; a character will see several vases, each with a particular style, and each of which is filled with some household object, and the combination is clearly meant to represent some kind of concrete theme. Without knowing what, however, it’s like reading an AI’s attempt at a children’s story.

I wouldn’t recommend reading the whole thing except for historical purposes.
