The Empress of Salt and Fortune
by Nghi Vo
A bit of fruit for the soul
You know when you bite into a piece of fresh, sweet fruit? It tastes like the most amazing thing you’ve ever had in your life- nothing could be this delicate yet bold, sweet yet powerful?
That’s exactly what this short novel is like. The complex delicacy of the first luxurious bite of a perfectly ripe fruit (I’m imagining watermelon or maybe pineapple?). It’s something that leaves behind a taste you can’t explain but will always search for.
The storytelling and form the book takes is phenomenal and I haven’t seen it enough. I would’ve easily read it in one sitting if I had the chance.
