I really enjoyed the story and world that the author built to begin this series. Inspired by a time in Asia that isn't talked about often brings a perspective that feels very real and raw even through the guise of a fictional novel. I found it difficult to connect with the main character, her feral anger controlled her every decision and while understandable, it left me judging her instead of empathizing with her. But maybe she will continue to grow as the series progresses!
