A Voyage of Mist and Shadows by Alexander Lound

4.0

Four books in and I still don’t know what to expect from every entry.

Each book before this one had it’s own unique (and amazing) plot, so there’s no real surprise that this one also takes readers to a new side of this story. This time, our main characters arrive in a small town only to find that sea wraiths are killing the townspeople.

One thing I really liked about this plot was the creativity in the sea wraith monsters. I’ve never heard of a sea wraith before, but especially not any sort of monster who specifically targets its own living species. These former humans attacking living humans while former seals attack seals (and so on) was such an interesting detail I wouldn’t have thought of for a monster!

As always, I also love how the characters have grown so far. I’ve realized recently that I really love characters who are mature enough to explain their emotions to others and realize when they are wrong, so seeing one of our main characters learning from the past books and actively using that experience to fuel his interactions with others in this book was such an amazing part of this story!

And honestly? This book was kind of cute. After the horror elements of the other books, I wasn’t expecting to really care for the monsters in this book. But I ended this book thinking of how strangely wholesome the sea wraiths were and what a nice experience the townspeople of Ribe had with monsters who wanted to kill them.

I’m definitely excited to see more of this series and what these characters have waiting for them in the future! If you haven’t checked out these books yet, what are you waiting for?
