Yeesh. There is so much here, it’s almost too complicated to describe. Two teenagers with lives of complexity that defy the oversimplified headlines serve as an entry point for so many conversations. Race, poverty, gender, crime and justice. I found myself asking, over and over, how can this end well? For any of them? For all of us? In the vein of the very best literary nonfiction, you’re whisked away by a compelling story, but enlightened by well-timed historical lessons, a reminder that all of this is real, and really well-researched. A worthwhile investment of time and deep thought.
