Forever
by Pete Hamill
So, this book is the only book that my parents both quote several times a year (they are both big readers but don’t generally read the same thing). I’ve grown up hearing about Forever by Pete Hamill. In fact, there was a short period of time during which that I lied and told them I read it so they would stop asking me whether or not I had read it yet. It had a lot to live up to.
It does not disappoint. Don’t get me wrong, this book is long and dense. There are sections that seem to take weeks to get through. But it’s a fascinating epic about a young Irishman. The first third took place in Ireland when he’s a boy and that was probably my favorite section. But also learning about early Manhattan was super interesting as well. Actually, it’s not possible to pick a favorite part.
This feels like the first true “hard” book I’ve read since the start of the pandemic 10 months ago, and it was rewarding to finish it. Makes me remember that I need to be less intimidated by dense books and that I’m actually smart enough to enjoy them.
