i loved that sign language and deaf culture history was incorporated in short little excerpts between the chapters. it was really interesting to see how the author was able to include that and still feel so authentic. i really enjoyed that we got multiple perspectives, it added a lot of depth to the story. everyone's experiences were so different, and that really helped to not make deaf individuals not come off as a single experience (as many people can mistake).
i loved that the author stressed the impacts of implants as well. i think people often act like deafness is something that needs to be cured and if people could hear then it would solve everything. charlie clearly showed that was not the case. her mom absolutely pissed me off (as intended), but sadly, her character is very realistic.
the only thing that i didn't care for too much, was the big hype about them running away. it was mentioned briefly in the beginning and then not mentioned again till the end. it just felt a bit unnecessary and i think the book would have stood strong enough without that. or it could have been flushed out a bit more to make it more worthwhile.
