Catching Fire
by Suzanne Collins
I think this series is beginning to lose its sentimental charm for me.
Everything does happen quickly since we just went through the Hunger Games process in the last book. As the districts begin to dissent more visibly, the Capital tightens its grip on food, energy, and freedom of movement. The small bits of resistance that District 12 functioned on become impossible to commit.
Collins introduces the Gale vs. Peeta dynamic and connects it directly to what kind of rebel Katniss is becoming (I.e Gale’s violence vs Peeta’s non-violence). I didn’t like it when I read this series in middle school and I don’t like it now. Even for young readers, I think it’s too simplistic.
