Holy hell, this book is heavy handed. The sexism and racism are cartoonish. I was going to put this down at the absolutely ridiculous misogyny, like “you slept your way to the top” levels of eye rolling, but then the main character turn to the Irish-coded “Other” and asks, in all earnestness, if he can follow directions, and is unsure whether he can actually read. (I’m sure part of the point will be her unlearning this.) The main character is also neurodivergent/autistic-ish coded, but everything you expect ND rep to be rather than anything interesting or compelling. It’s a shame, because the prose and pacing were fine (granted, I was listening at 1.5 speed), and the magic system seemed interesting, and this is a dark academia actually DEALING with academia! I loved that she was a researcher! But wow. I can’t listen any longer.
