Fourth Wing has been highly hyped up on tiktok and Instagram which immediately makes me approach it with caution. Though it wasn't as bad as I expected, there are a few things that I wasn't a massive fan of.

The book follows Violet who is being forced by her mother to join the Riders despite the fact that she has been training her whole life to be a Scribe. Whilst having to battle her way through the challenges and dangers that come with attempting to join the Riders, she also has to battle her way through the year with Xaden, a man who is happy to kill her at any moment (or so she was told).

Here's the thing, I really like the concept. I think it would have been amazing if it wasn't for the absolutely horrific execution. Let's start with the characters first.

Violet. She's smaller and weaker than all the others. We. Get. It. It gets mentioned over and over. But what's funny about this is that she somehow manages to beat everyone easily. I know she was trained, but we don't know any details or anything and it was just rushed past basically saying “Yeah she trained. How? I don't know but she did, trust me.” I wouldn't say I despised her character, but she was slightly irritating.

Xaden was the typical tall, dark and handsome man that everyone falls over etc, etc, etc. It's typical but it doesn't make him any less hot. I don't really have much of an issue with his character, in fact I think he has a little more depth than most of the other characters.

My main issue was the “relationship” between Xaden and Violet. This could be one of the worst enemies to lovers I've ever read; possible on par with Tamlin and Feyre. Her self control is pretty much nil and the relationship is incredibly shallow and lacks any depth.

The overall writing was also lacking. It's incredibly cringy and to be honest, it reminds me of Wattpad writing. Though I was able to push past that on most parts, any part that seemed to mention Xaden being attractive was particularly cringy and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. There is also a lack of world building which left me feeling very unfulfilled throughout the book.

Outside of the romance parts, I did find the plot a lot more interesting. That was the main thing that kept me going with the book. Though it was very surface level writing, and parts of the plot were very predictable, it was still enjoyable enough to keep me interested.

Overall, I would read this if I wanted a quick easy read but I don't think it was particularly amazing, especially because of the writing and lack of world development. I will continue to the second book as I am interested in the plot but generally, I think it is severely overhyped.
