I think this book is a very complicated one. I recognize that it may be hard for some to read and believe in, however, I think that its a valuable look at the guilt some feel after having an abortion while recognizing its importance in allowing them to create their own life.
This also a novel that is so rooted in attempting to live a life your mother didn't get. My mother married my father two days after she turned 19 and a month before officially finishing high school. Growing up, I heard stories of her dreams of majoring in English in college and seeing the nation. Things she was never able to do since she was a stepmother at 19 and a mother to her first two children by 23. I understand Nadia's motivations and fears of not having the life she wanted and simultaneously wanting to live for her mother, both figuratively and literally.
I do hate Luke though and I don't think I care that he's sad about the abortion....
