Kissing Girls on Shabbat: A Memoir
by Sara Glass
I think more than anything else, this book is about trauma. Trauma compounding through the years, creating a new existence for not just one person, but for many. It gets you to think about how trauma affects families, communities, relationships, not just one person. The book was heavvvvvvvvy, sharing insights about custody battles, sexual assault, trauma therapy, Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish communities, religious trauma, bipolar disorder, suicide, discovering one's sexuality, and single motherhood, and that is just a glimpse. I hope queer people who have left ultra-Orthodox lifestyles find solace in this book. And hey, good on the author and her family for their success/survival and especially for being bravely vulnerable enough to tell the story.
