The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowal

This is SO good. MRK has packed into this space travel story some really well-written social commentary, not only about sexism in the time period ('60s) and setting of the book, but also racism, grief, anxiety, politics. Parts of the story that could have gotten a bit dull just weren't, thanks for example to the humour she included between the characters, and I appreciated that she leaves out the majority of techno-babble that could potentially have been included - this is more a story about humanity and its reactions to what has happened, and Elma's development as a person and what she learns from those around her. Parker is also an interesting, well rounded character, I thought the interactions between he and Elma were well done.

Will be launching into book 3 soon!
