The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by Rebecca Skloot
Henrietta Lacks’ story, and her family’s, is complex and heartbreaking. The book begins a bit dryly as it explains the science you’ll need to know, but what unfolds alongside that is a compelling, emotional description of Lacks’ family members and how her tissue use has affected their lives.
After I read the book, I started searching to find out if her family had finally received any compensation from the book and film. To date, it seems that there conflicts underway. All I can say is that I’m thankful to be made aware of the road ahead of us for tissue use permissions, and I’m thankful to know of Lacks’ life and family. That’s a start, and I hope the best for them.
