chibigraph 's review for:
Metazoa: Animal Minds and the Birth of Consciousness
by Peter Godfrey-Smith
slow-paced
I thought this wa a pop-sci book but its a maundering philosophy book full of guesses and speculation. The subject — the evolution of animal minds — is inherently fascinating, but the book consists of the author's observations of his beloved underwater world with very thin bows drawn to aspect of sensation combined with philosophical musings on the nature of felt experience, conciousness, sentience and all of it jumbled up and not well explained what he means by any of that. It was a trudge and almost reached the point of being physically painful to finish!I finished it out of stubbornness and a pathological inability to DNF.
