nalou 's review for:
Dating Mr. Darcy
by Kate O'Keeffe
4 stars
So I read that book at least a few weeks ago, but completely forgot to write my review (bad me, it'll definitely not help). I thus won't get into specifics (my brain is not capable of remembering all the details), BUT a late review has the advantage of having a more cold-analyzing feedback, so that counts for something, right?
I'm a sucker for products that are derivatives of Pride and Prejudice and was thus immediately drawn to this book. At the same time, I'm really not into anything related to TV reality shows. This book being at the intersection of the two, I'm not surprised to say that I liked it, but I didn't love it.
It's a romantic comedy that's entertaining from the start. See, Emma doesn't want to be on that TV show, but does it to save her business, so you get an heroin who has a view on the program that totally matches my own and, that, I really liked. I also really liked the friendships she slowly develops along the way with some constestants. They clashed nicely with the the rivalry and jealousy from others, which is to be expected when the show consists of winning a guy's heart (erh, or money/estate/connexions, your pick). All of it is to be expected, so no real surprises there.
What surprised me more was to be so into Emma's head that I wanted to hide when she got into an embarrassing moment, or really happy when she did something particularly great. What that means to me is that I connected with her, I empathized, I felt like I was in her shoes (not all the time, but enough to elicit emotional responses). Which means great writing in my book (pun intended). I also remember smiling and probably laughing, so more good points.
The plot is not all that unexpected, I knew, from the first chapters, how it would play out in the end, but that's okay for me because I'd consider this book a light read, something to distract you, and it succeeds completely in doing that.
So, overall, a pretty good book that I'd recommend. Might check out more work from this author!
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy from Hidden Gems.
