This is more like a 4.5 for me, but I ended up really enjoying it. I liked the first book a lot better than the Soulbound series, but I still couldn’t get fully into it because of the writing and the amount of POVs. There’s just so much going on, and the writing is often cluttered and mechanical in a way that doesn’t help - I think it was also tough to follow the first book because it took place over a number of years. I liked this one better because the timeline was simpler, and the plot was action-packed and kept me invested. I love all the queer characters, and the romances have me wanting to read more. The political betrayals and surprises in this book were entertaining all the way through to the end. I’m looking forward to the final book in the trilogy, and I think this is probably Hailey Turner’s best book yet, despite my issues with her writing style. It’s a really solid steampunk fantasy that I could see myself reading again.
